Tasting Notes
Bend Brewing has been around for a while (since 1995), but this is the first bottle I've had a chance to taste. They either only recently started bottling, or we only recently started getting distribution in Portland. Either way, I'm stoked! Bottle notes:
Hop Head is Bend Brewing Company's personal gift to those who live life in pursuit of the hop. Hop Head has an exquisite hop aroma followed by an excessive hop flavor that leaves you wanting more.
Hop Head is a seasonal imperial IPA. I want to say "holiday IPA", but there's not really anything seasonally-specific about this beer, other than the label. Pours clear orange, smells a bit piney. The taste is good; good hops, nice bitterness, the right balance of sweetness... some biscuit. I was surprised that this beer had as high of an ABV as it did -- it certainly didn't taste like an imperial. Very smooth. Very drinkable. But, alas... Oregon is a state replete with IPAs. It's hard to stand out or be original, and Hop Head suffers because of this. It's a little too smooth. I could've used a more assertive hops profile -- a little bit of sharpness, or bite. There's a great piney aroma, but it doesn't follow-through into the taste. As the bottle notes promised, it left me wanting more... though perhaps not in the way the copy writer intended.
