A big yet very approachable beer. Lots of fruity complexity (banana, cherry, apricot), without a lot of the smoky phenols and higher alcohol notes of many Belgian ale strains. The fermentation finished dry, but with residual sweetness from a blend of light and dark crystal malts.
Red War was the fourth and final beer I tasted in Double Mountain's "Four Horsemen" series -- which means I can now declare a winner, which is far and away (to me, at least) the
Black Famine quad. Mmmm... I wonder if there's any still out on the market? Probably not, but damn, if I see any...
I digress, let's review the beer at hand: Red War. Pours clear amber, with a fizzy head which dissipates into some sweet, sticky lacing. Smells like caramel, as a "red" should, I suppose. Some spice.
Taste is earthy, sweet, and full of funky esters, unlike the (somewhat disappointing)
Pale Death I'd drank the night before. Bready. Finishes sweet and sticky, with a slight taste of alcohol. Yum!
