Sour beers may not be for everyone, but every time I've visited the Cascade Barrel House in Portland I've found their beers to be flavorful, nuanced, and delicious. I've tried their Blueberry on tap a few times, and it was always amongst my favorites -- I suppose it doesn't hurt that I tend to love blueberries in almost any form (pie, jam, muffin). I rushed down to grab a bottle of the 2012 release within days of hearing an announcement about it. I only managed to keep the bottle cellared for a measly three months before pulling it out and popping the cork on my birthday last week. Here's the official description from the side of the bottle: Pours pinkish-purple with a small, fizzy head that dissipates almost immediately. Smells like a funky sour with strong blueberry overtones, as expected. Taste is also as expected -- SOUR!! But once you get past the sourness, there's also a mildly-sweet, delicious blueberry base, with a bit of oak. A touch of vanilla on the finish. As the beer warmed up, the sourness became less apparent -- or less "bitey", at least -- and the intricacies really started to come out. Smooth, crisp, tart, and oaky. So good!! Needless to say, I really enjoyed this beer. It's worth mentioning that Cascade beers do tend to carry a bit of a hefty price: $17/bottle for the Blueberry. That said, this is a slow-sipping beer to be enjoyed with friends, and I found it to be worth every damn penny. Yum yum yum. Cheers, Cascade!
