Pictured with it's sister, the Boulevard Collaboration No. 2.
Second in a series, this citrusy, smooth white India pale ale is a fortuitous meeting of Deschutes' hop skills and Boulevard's deft wheat touch.
Working from a single shared recipe, each brewery brewed their own Belgian-style hoppy witbier. Since the beer store had both versions, I picked up a bottle of each to compare. As you can see from the picture above, the Deschutes version is a lighter, cloudier straw-colored beer. It had a bigger head, was a bit bubblier, and had a much stronger hop and lemon presence in the nose. The Boulevard, while very similar, had a tiny bit more caramel flavor, and felt a tad maltier. Overall, though, they tasted nearly identical. Which is to say:
Wow. Yum! I've never had a Belgian IPA (or "White IPA", as Boulevard is calling it) before. The nose is hoppy and lemony, and the hops continue through into the creamy, herbal witbier body. A nice dry, crisp finish. Really enjoyable.
If I had to choose between the two variants, I think I liked the Deschutes version better. The stronger nose made it feel a little crisper, maybe. They're both really delicious, though, and I'd rate them both identically. I really enjoyed this, and look forward to Conflux No. 1, which (oddly enough) hasn't been released yet.
