Tasting Notes
Another new Oregon brewery, bringing my total up to 47. Yowza. Flat Tail Brewing opened in Corvallis, Oregon last year, and began bottling this year. The brewery space itself is a sports bar, which makes the kind-of-pretentious bottle description on this beer even stranger:
Fall! A season of contrasts... The weather grows colder, our hearts grow warmer... We indulge in spicy and sweet Bacchanalian delights of the familiar and extravagant; strengthen bonds and break bread with family, friends, and friends-to-be. If you could bottle Fall, you'd be holding it in your hand right now.
Okay, on to an actual description of the beer...
Plump and fresh Northwest-grown pumpkins, rich English and Scottish malts, exotic cinnamon bark and warm, whole vanilla beans create an incredibly fresh, flavorful, and festive stout, perfect for the season.
Hmm... that actually sounds pretty good! Unfortunately for both me and Flat Tail, it wasn't. Pours with almost no head. Thin, weak body that tastes like a mixture of squash and milk chocolate. Good subtle vanilla flavor, but the overwhelming vegetable flavors ruins it. I'd like to say "pumpkin" instead of "squash" or "vegetable", but this wasn't really the traditional pumpkin flavor that you find in other pumpkin ales and stouts. More holiday spices maybe could have rounded things out more. I couldn't taste any cinnamon at all. This was the last, and easily my least favorite of this season's round of autumn and pumpkin beers. Bleh.
