I remember seeing Stingy Jack advertised on the side of Laurelwood's Hollywood pub last year and being disappointed that I missed it's short lifespan. I caught it on tap a few weeks ago, and was surprised when I ran across it again in bottle form at
Belmont Station a few days later. I think this is the first year that Laurelwood has bottled Stingy Jack, which is exciting news for those folks (like me) who miss some of the smaller seasonals on tap.
Anyway, on to the beer: it's really more of a "fall spice" than a "pumpkin" beer per se, but enjoyable nonetheless. Pours a caramel-amber color with a small bit of tan head. Smells of caramel and cinnamon with some subtle spicy undertones. Taste follows along with a full, malty caramel and more cinnamon and clove spiciness. Some pumpkiny flavor, but not a lot. My girlfriend tasted it and remarked "close your eyes and think 'cinnamon buns'."
It may not be slapping you in the face with pumpkin, but I liked it. The warm, spicy flavors definitely fit the fall season. Overall, I was pretty excited about this beer. I'm a bit biased, though; pumpkin ales are one of my favorite beer styles, and I'm an obvious Laurelwood (or at least
Workhorse) fan. I'd love to see some other local breweries give pumpkin ales a go -- it's not October yet, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
