Tasting Notes

I'd been saving this one for over a month, intending to get a picture next to an actual creek. Alas, the Clackamas River at low summertime flows will have to do.
Part of Rogue's GYO (Grow Your Own) series, the Creek Ale is a kriek-style Belgian brewed using Rogue's own home-grown hops and barley, Montmorency cherries, and "free range" coastal water. Sounds good!
Pours a deep, dark brownish-red. A bit of creamy, foamy head. Aroma of malts and subtle fruitiness.
The taste is a bit muddled. Cherries, definitely... sweet, with a bit of a tart pucker. A surprising bit of caramel, and much creamier than I expected. Medium-heavy body with mild carbonation. Sour finish.
I'm a bit torn on this one. I didn't read the bottle before opening it, and didn't make the creek/kriek connection until after my first sip. I was taken aback with a "what is this, cough syrup!?" moment, but that quickly passed as I sat down and took a few more drinks. The cherry flavor is pretty darn good. The balance seemed a little off, but not unpleasant. Maybe a bit more carbonation?
Overall, the Creek Ale was quite tasty and unexpected, but it wasn't great, which I wanted it to be after spending $10+ on the bottle.
