Tasting Notes
Chances are you've already read all about the W'12 -- Widmer apparently held an event, or sent free samples out, or something. Not to me, though! Alas, "dark saison" still sounded interesting enough for me to pick up a 6-pack, which I did at the first opportunity possible (in-store, at Belmont Station). I was secretly kind of hoping that I'd hate this beer, so I could write a "real" non-biased review of it, and criticize all of those freebie reviewers for praising something just because they got it for free. Does that make me sound bitter? Callous? Yeah, probably. Oh well. Here's the official description from the Widmer website:
Inspired by the classic french farmhouse ale, our interpretation of the saison style gets it's dark color and deep ruby hue from a hint of caramel and dark chocolate malts. While the beer is darker than many examples of the style, the citrus spice of Saaz hops provides a perfect balance of complex fruity esters with earthy and spicy notes. Dark Saison finished slightly tart with a drying, clean, and pepper-like finish.
As it stands, I liked the W'12, just as I liked it's two predecessors, W'10 and W'11. This year's signature W-beer, though labelled as a "dark saison", didn't really seem all that saison-esque to me. Or all that dark, really. But it's good! Pours a kind of amber-brown, foamy head, smells like wheaty caramel. Taste is smooth, light and clean. A little spicy, a little herbal, definitely malty. Some caramel sweetness balanced with a little bit of hops bite at the end. Mouthfeel and taste seemed more like a bock than a "dark saison"... then again, I'm not sure what I was expecting out of a "dark saison". Something a little heavier and creamier, maybe. I ended up liking this beer more and more with every bottle, and the sixer didn't end up lasting very long. No hard feelings, Widmer, you folks made a pretty darn tasty beer which I predict I'll gladly pay for again in the near future. Prost!
